I forgot that the thumb is supposed to go on the other side for right mittens. It's not like the book didn't provide a right mitten chart, I just forgot to look at it. I suppose my only trace of an excuse might me I'm used to knitting socks, which are the same for each foot, so naturally I forgot that hands are different. That and the fact that I haven't knit a whole lot mittens in my life, so even though I've been knitting for almost six years, I'm still learning. I'll post a picture of them when I'm done.Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11557680520565250671noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10776180.post-14750787847329438872010-08-21T04:44:00.001-07:002010-08-21T04:44:05.104-07:00Baby Hat

Aug10 048, originally uploaded by KristintheMom.

I have been working hard this summer, despite my promise to myself to knit less and read more. Old habits die hard, and hey, when Ben's therapist Deana has a baby on the way, one simply must knit for it. I didn't learn to knit until my kids were toddlers, so I missed the whole baby knitting thing for my own kids. It's just not the same. I made a hat, sweater and socks for the new little guy (due in October) out of Berroco Vintage. LOVE it. I think this might be my new favorite yarn. It's washable, feels great and is very affordable!
Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11557680520565250671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10776180.post-64362057834160338462010-05-14T06:08:00.000-07:002010-05-14T06:15:20.395-07:00Hedgehogs R Us<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiajcNiIGlRd69Wf3BSQSYpb-GT62a2g8isFpUOFSMNc7UGykbqcGxiSNjyiU5ReQJheHB2EkGtjqfxw6djv-_N2wKYZkiqS_flXiPwSKLOul2P5PIQKzXxchkliH0ueMoTPKCp/s320/May10+101.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5471112622591655634" />
I've completed two hedgehogs for the girls this week. This is a picture of the first one. One thing about these two hogs - Rob says they seem to have a weight problem. Yes, they're kind of obese, but the girls love them. The pattern was pretty easy to make and I'm even considering making another for Ben's ABA therapist's baby due in October. I've found that I'm really starting to gain an appreciation for Lion Brand Fun Fur. Maybe it's not the thing to use on garments, but for animals and pillows, it rocks.Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11557680520565250671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10776180.post-34411979824295136462010-01-31T14:19:00.001-08:002010-01-31T14:21:02.071-08:00Incredible Upside Down Cassidy Sweater

Love this sweater. I'll admit, I stopped by a needlework store yesterday just to check it out and lo and behold, they had yarn there. I was the only customer in this huge store, and the employees seemed very happy to see me. But I couldn't leave with a clear conscience no matter what. I felt obligated to buy something because I know how much retail stores are hurting these days and I really want stores that sell yarn to make money and stay in business. But, as I said before, I have enough yarn. In fact, I have way more than enough. I could knit comfortably for at least the next two years and not buy another skein. But I found I could just leave the store. I felt bad for it. So I tried to pick out something I liked, that wasn't too expensive. I ended up buying another skein of sock yarn, because I just don't want to knit another hat or scarf, and I sure as heck don't want to shell out the money for a sweater's worth of yarn until I knit up most of the other stuff. The skein I bought was Mountain Color's Bearfoot in Juniper. It's a nice hand painted kind of green, and it's machine washable. I guess it was the lesser of two evils, but I guess I learned my lesson and that is, don't go into stores that sell yarn!Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11557680520565250671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10776180.post-44564350858157856492009-04-23T03:42:00.001-07:002009-04-23T03:42:11.288-07:00chevronscarf

chevronscarf, originally uploaded by KristintheMom.

This is the Chevron scarf mentioned in the previous post. I knitted the Chevron scarf a while back, and was disconcerted by the amount of leftover yarn I had. Surely, there had to be something else I could do with it. I was pretty sure I couldn't knit a whole pair of socks for me with it, but maybe, just maybe I could knit a pair for one of the kids. The only real way to do this would be to knit the socks toe-up. So, with a little guidance from Wendy Bernard's book, Socks From the Toe Up, I took the plunge. These socks were knit for Katherine in my leftover Farmhouse colorway. Look for the upcoming socks for Caroline in my leftover Fred Flintstone colorway!
Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11557680520565250671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10776180.post-45029654309879329652009-04-23T03:34:00.001-07:002009-04-23T03:34:59.987-07:00All the Octopi

april09 005, originally uploaded by KristintheMom.

Here are three baby Octopi I made. I find it's a good excuse to watch tv and ignore housework. It's more fun anyway! I'm making good progress on my two current projects, the Back To School U Neck Vest from Fitted Knits, and my Monkey Socks. I'm knitting the Monkey socks during the day, and the vest at night while I watch Colbert Report, CNN, Wife Swap or Clean House. I've joined the Ravelry group Vestuary, and I'm pretty sure I'll be done with the vest by the end of Feb, at which time I will post pictures. I've found a few new patterns that have recently caught my obsession, one of them being this one:
http://www.jimmybeanswool.com/freeKnittingPatternScarvesToThrowMonth5.asp
I love it. I don't know why exactly. I love it so much that I made just a very small little order to the Loopy Ewe to get some Dream In Color Classy in the Dusky Aurora colorway so that I can knit it. Okay, so I ordered two balls of it, because I felt sure that after I knitted this wonderful scarf I would want to knit myself a hat http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/meret-mystery-beret## or some fingerless gloves http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/evangeline## to go with it. I like to match, what can I say? I've been pretty good otherwise, though I almost gave in when I saw that Lion Wool was on sale at Michaels this week. But I stayed away! I'm being kind of frugal! Maybe Suze Orman is finally getting to me.Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11557680520565250671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10776180.post-17493186603966179682009-02-01T06:40:00.000-08:002009-02-01T06:53:28.238-08:00Classic Socks, A Penguin, A Hat and Fuzzy Feet!

Well, I finally finished my husband's socks, after much knitting. I thought they would never end! I made them from the book 2 at a Time Socks, and followed the pattern just as it said. However, I ran out of yarn towards the end so they're a little shorter than I had intended, but I think they'll be okay for Rob.

Project Number 2 -- Fern Glade from Knitty. Ran out of yarn here too. Hmm. Seems to be a trend. Maybe I knit fat. I love it though and it was an easy lace pattern.

Project Number 3 - Penguin from Amigurumi World. Made this one for Katherine with the intention of giving it to her for Christmas, but I didn't finish it until this month. Oh well. Enough with the crochet. Back to knitting.

Project Number 4 has no picture. I made a pair of Fuzzy Feet from Knitty. I haven't felted them yet and I have a lot of leftover Lamb's Pride - almost a whole skein. I'm going to make a pair of socks and send them to Afghans for Afghans with it. Maybe I can fit in a little pair of baby socks too.

The year long yarn diet is going well so far, but I can't say I haven't been tempted. So far, I've been able to talk myself out of it by getting excited about my next project. Next up is the Back to School U Neck Vest from Fitted Knits. Hope to do a swatch today and get started.

Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11557680520565250671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10776180.post-80711145001478455652008-12-11T03:26:00.000-08:002008-12-11T03:32:58.917-08:00Off the Wagon and Back On . . .Okay, technically, I've already fallen off the knit from my stash wagon. Darn that Knitty! As most of you probably know, Knitty's Winter 2008 issue came out yesterday and I fell in love with Fern Glade, and of course, that resulted in me ordering 2 balls of RYC silk wool dk so I could knit the darn thing. I really had nothing in my stash that I could have substituted. Honest. And technically, need I point out, it's still 2008. :-)Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11557680520565250671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10776180.post-87590502495379254272008-12-06T11:06:00.000-08:002008-12-06T11:09:16.633-08:00Knitting My Yarn All Up in 2009Okay, I've decided to make a very deep, very serious knitting committment for the new year. I will only knit from my stash. Period. I am putting all of my future projects into my Ravelry queue, and designating what yarn that I own I will use for each one. I have plenty to keep my busy for the whole year, and if I'm good, I will let myself buy some new yarn for Christmas next year. Yay! I love this! It makes me happy to be frugal!!!Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11557680520565250671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10776180.post-38589994811538914852008-06-27T07:27:00.001-07:002008-06-27T07:27:48.035-07:00I'm In Love . . .

KUDOS 005, originally uploaded by KristintheMom.

I must say, I recieved this yarn yesterday as an early birthday present (thanks to Loopy Ewe's super fast shipping), and I LOVE it! I bought this yarn last year with the intention of making a bag similar to this after I saw a cool picture in a Kohl's ad. So I ripped it out and saved it and last week I decided the time had come to finally make it. I just improvised because I didn't have a pattern, but all in all I'm pleased with how it turned out. I glued a piece of cardboard into the bottom to give it a place to sit, and then I made a lining for it and sewed a snap onto it. Voila! My summer purse!Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11557680520565250671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10776180.post-42539898883107919842008-04-02T05:59:00.000-07:002008-04-09T17:51:15.954-07:00Sophie Bag<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGZJOqUKC-PxZX7LdsnVpquqsPIfdmFZ1GLnZe1hGeavSoxQWLlV2uoxo-_CmwpcMPAA-ksWCgV3Mc66imdpUw-VDDFiqfbAGQL2FNiNqM9A0rbjRY4z3aqTeUSaycSlsXm0OJ/s320/sophieBF.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5187412799903296578" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLAoGavHg9ueKA5xOUWPMIz6638-bHIE_9OMkN7klVG_J8d6EqstgDR87GdcVkzuikcSlv0xaOX2B_JXgVGwtrMZO6PWk4GPaRnzKJEGeWHyg2QQmgTD1ZFGWEov3Qr99QeirB/s320/SophieAF.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5187412812788198482" />

My Sophie Bag is done! Neither of them turned out quite as well as I wanted them to, but the girls liked them. Francesca is the butterfly and I made her for Katherine because back when she was 3, she was a butterfly one year for Halloween. I had a little trouble figuring out how to make the wings for her, but I managed somehow. Ruby is the strawberry, because the same year Katherine was a butterfly, Caroline was a strawberry. Go figure.Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11557680520565250671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10776180.post-5098736200000667642008-03-20T07:04:00.000-07:002008-03-20T07:12:04.882-07:00Jaywalkers<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxfPIa6lqUZgDWWzVXKMIEiAHCQGWC39pqzb23ZSAVgzTHzziPdCHP_ztSt6lafFAj7bYiRepEZs17daBWRwGmh6NinWskPQcAaOxjpzIwWs8ZFZiZDuYIdECsGN0sO_c5M4eY/s320/jaywalkers.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5179825002996019778" />

I was beginning to think I'd never get back to these things. I cast on in either november or december, can't remember which. I was so anxious to use the long awaited sock pixie yarn that I ordered in the Sunset colorway. I rolled it into a ball right away and started making my Jaywalkers. Of course, other things got in the way, like my daughters' demand for more amigurumi animals, of course. And finishing my Chevron Scarf. Still, when I needed easy knitting I came back to the Jaywalkers. The pattern is great, smooth, and quick knitting even if I'm not. Second sock syndrome set in of course, but I finally got them done. I can see why other people have complained about them being hard to get on if done too small, so I knitted them up at a slightly larger gauge than called for. It worked out fine and now I have finished my 3rd pair of socks!Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11557680520565250671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10776180.post-2940275212638292122007-11-11T16:56:00.001-08:002007-11-11T16:56:53.421-08:00Gobble Him Up

turkey, originally uploaded by KristintheMom.

Okay, not really. Here's the start of my other obsession. I can feel it coming on. It's called Amigurumi! I took a break from my Chevron scarf and crocheted this octopus from PepperKitty's Octopode pattern on Craftster. I made it out of Bernat Softee Chunky, and it turned out quite big. However, one ball of yarn wasn't quite enough to make eight legs, so I had to stop with six. Doesn't matter though, she still loves it and it's been sleeping with her every night. So there it is. I have started making another Amigurumi project that is a Turkey from Bittersweet's homepage. I'm almost done. These amigurmi's are fast! That's one of the things I like about crochet. I'll post it when I finish. No, that's not right. I'm too TIME Crunched to take another one. Anyway, here it is, my Chevron Scarf, made from Socks that Rock Mediumweight in Fred Flintstone and Farmhouse. They are both beautiful yarns individually, and I'm pleased so far at how they are working together. My new winter coat is a dark red, so I wanted to make sure I knitted a scarf that I actually could wear. It's a fun project to knit, but very time consuming. I"m actually about 40 percent done now.
Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11557680520565250671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10776180.post-56531475651238977862007-10-18T14:39:00.001-07:002007-10-18T14:39:13.616-07:00Katherine's Sweater

kathsweater, originally uploaded by KristintheMom.

Yay! I did it! I made a whole sweater! Granted, it's a kids sweater, but darn it, I worked hard on that thing. I am not the fastest knitter in the world, in part because I don't have a lot of time to devote to it. I think I'll stick to smaller projects for the time being. Like socks and scarves. Anyhow, I'm very pleased with the final product. It's a Yarn Girl Knits for Older Kids creation, specifically the "Family That Knits Together" sweater. I made it with Caron Simply Soft Shadows, and Simply Soft. I used acrylic because my daughter has allergies and I was afraid an animal fiber would accentuate that. Anyhow, I'm sure glad it's done, and I love it!
Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11557680520565250671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10776180.post-35461532980170120182007-10-18T14:29:00.001-07:002007-10-18T14:29:22.106-07:00FlickrThis is a test post from , a fancy photo sharing thing.Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11557680520565250671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10776180.post-30193090463451444522007-08-13T15:41:00.000-07:002007-08-13T15:44:18.457-07:00My New Socks!

Yay! I'm finally finished with my Regia Bamboo socks! I can start something else now! Actually, I have a lot of things I want to finish first. These socks were knit using the baby cable rib pattern in Sensational Knitted socks, but I used the top down pattern for 5 stitch repeats in the MORE Sensational Knitted Socks book. I'm pleased with them, and most importantly, they fit!Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11557680520565250671noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10776180.post-12586234302823082532007-08-03T12:39:00.000-07:002007-08-03T12:48:58.966-07:00A Knitting Questionaire snagged from Knitting Help's Forums1.) What are your favorite things to knit? Right now, socks. And things for my kids.

2.) What yarn/fiber do you like most? I like wool. But I knit with other stuff too. The only things I don't like are really cheap yarns (except cotton) and Mohair! Mohair bothers my contact lenses for some reason.

3.) What needles do you tend to use (i.e. type/material)?Circular ones. I use DPNs for socks but I'm trying to learn how to use circulars for them too.

4.) Do you tend to knit more in one specific part of the year than others?I knit the same way all year long.

5.) What style of knitting do you use? Continental. It's the way I learned from a book and since I'm left handed, it works for me.

6.) Do you consider yourself a "fast" knitter? No, not really. I've started choosing smaller projects since it takes me so long.

7.) Who is your favorite knitting author? Charlene Schurch right now. Love those sock books.

8.) What is your favorite by said author? More Sensational Knitted Socks

9.) How long ago did you learn to knit? 2 and a half years ago. January 2005.

10.) How do you knit small in-the-round objects? I use douple points, but I'm going to teach myself how to use circulars.

11.) What is the most useful technique you've learned so far? Yarn overs! Now I can knit lacey patterns.

12.) Do you prefer to knit fine gauge items, mid-range gauge items, or large gauge items, or do you like it all ? I like a gauge of about 5 stitches per inch. Except when knitting socks, of course.

13.) How do you like to knit your sweaters? I really haven't knitted that many sweaters. I doing one for my daughter knit flat in pieces. I don't really like finishing, though, so I think I'd like to knit in the round next time.Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11557680520565250671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10776180.post-79558875720929873902007-07-08T07:54:00.000-07:002007-07-08T07:59:44.545-07:00Yeah, I'm a Sock Addict!Well, I've joined the wings of the sock addicted. I've only actually completed one pair so far, though. On my birthday I went to the local yarn store and bought some Regia Bamboo sock yarn and some Panda Wool sock yarn. I'm currently working on the Regia socks, and I really like how it's knitting up. The yarn is so soft. I gave in and purchase More Sensational Knitted Socks from Amazon, since I have the first book and I like it so much. I'm pretty determined at this point to knit the yarn I have, or at least a good portion of it before I buy anything else. I don't really have a large stash, but it's still a stash, and I want to bust it!Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11557680520565250671noreply@blogger.com0
